Squadron/Signal Publications 5525

Author/artist Lou Drendel provides a nose-to-tail photo guide to Grumman's versatile TBF/TBM Avenger bomber in this Squadron/Signal 'Walk Around' title, #25 in the series. Nicknamed 'The Turkey,' Grumman's big-bellied torpedo bomber was, in fact, beloved by the three-man crews who flew it, being a rugged, dependable warbird.
Drendel's book has the usual blend of photographs - many of them detail shots of various aircraft fixtures and equipment - plan-views, diagrams and color side-views. Modellers will appreciate the many 'up-close-and-personal' shots included in the book. Most of the photos depict preserved, warbird Avengers with about 12 pages being wartime pix.
Almost 10,000 Avengers were manufactured in all, the TBF first seeing combat in the Battle of Midway. After logging widespread USN, USMC, RN and RNZAF service in WWII, the Avenger was just as productive in the postwar era flying with various air forces. Lou Drendel's book is an entertaining visual guide to this long-serving warrior.
