As result of strange coincidence of historical circumstances, the oldest known by science people who inhabited the Bulgarian lands, the Thracians, were the last to be discovered compared to all the rest. Deprived of their own written tradition, they cannot tell us anything about themselves, about their history, religion and culture. Their neighbours, like all neighbours, treated them sometimes with benevolence, sometimes with hostility, but more often with undervaluation, thus blurring, rather than elucidating, the idea about the Thracians, imposing the impression that this people lived a quiet and monotonous life in the shadow of the ancient Greek civilization to the south and the world of the Scythians to the north. This is why it was no wonder that when slightly more than fifty years ago the world heard about the discovery in the heart of Thrace of one of the most remarkable ever gold treasures, the one from Panagyurishte, it struck nobody's mind that it could be connected with the Thracians and their culture.
