The ten years between 1950 and 1960 were busy years in US naval aviation. The post war demobilization came to an end and an explosive expansion once again was the order of the day. By the end of the decade, naval aircraft had changed greatly from predominantly propeller driven tactical aircraft to almost exclusively jets. These changes were the result of advancing technology in the aircraft industry, as well as changes in tactics and missions. This resulted in organizational adjustments and reassignment of units within the fleet. All of which kept unit designations and the Visual Identification System in a state of constant change. Along with the change in weapons systems and tactics, the aircraft paint scheme changed from the familiar Sea Blue to a Light Gray and White scheme for carrier aircraft. In the interest of safety, several high visibility paint schemes were developed for use in the Training Command and areas of high density aircraft traffic. The land camouflage scheme went from the Sea Blue, to Light Gray, to Marine Caps Green, with some odd variations along the way.
