    NSU in Neckarsulm erhielt 1940 den Auftrag, eine Zugmaschine für schweres Gelände von 0,5 t Zugkraft zu bauen. Da man damals noch nicht von dem Prinzip einer lenkbaren Vorderachse bei diesen Fahrzeugarten ab­weichen konnte, wurde sie — wie ihre schon vorhandenen größeren Brüder — auch ein Halbkettenfahrzeug, jedoch nur mit einer Motorradgabel, die für das Fahren auf der Straße auch eine Lenkfunktion ausübte.
    Wegen dieser und anderer Motorradteile erhielt es wohl die Bezeichnung (auch amt­lich) Kettenkraftrad (Kettenkrad), trotzdem es mit der Funktion und Aufgabe von Krädern überhaupt nichts zu tun hatte. Hieraus ist wohl auch der verbreitete Eindruck entstan­den, daß es als Krad Verwendung gefunden hätte, ja bei den Kradschützen vorrangig zum Einsatz gekommen wäre. All das trifft nicht zu — es war geplant als Zugmaschine und wurde auch zumeist — bei sehr vielen Waffen­gattungen und Truppenteilen — so einge­setzt.
