At the start of the conflict in the former Yugoslavia in 1991 Croatian armed forces consisted only of special police forces. These made up the nucleus of the future Croatian Army but, at the time, they did not possess any real military vehicles. Apart from those captured from the enemy they were thus obliged to use modified civilian vehicles.
