    On connaît surtout James Fenimore Cooper pour Le Dernier des Mohicans (1826). Mais on ignore souvent que son expérience des navires et de la mer lui a inspiré Le Corsaire Rouge (1827).
    Entré par hasard dans la carrière des lettres, Cooper transforme ici le modeste récit d’aventures maritimes du XVIIIe siècle anglais en une grandiose épopée en prose. Dans ce roman situé en 1759, un jeune officier loyaliste se lance à la poursuite du redoutable Corsaire Rouge, tout en cédant peu à peu à la fascination…

    Des scènes spectaculaires s’enchaînent (naufrage, mutinerie, sauvetage, bataille navale), tandis que le huis clos du navire devient un véritable monde où les valeurs qui gouvernaient la vie de ceux qui ont embarqué sont mises à l’épreuve.
