What makes a joint rigid and what makes it flexible? How does software determine the stiffness of a joint?

    What you'll learn
Understanding basic concepts on fixed, rigid and pinned joints; Moment and Rigid Connections
Determination of Joint Stiffness as per IS 800:2007 and EN 1993-1-8
Joint Stiffness Classification in IDEA StatiCa
Modeling of Extended End Plate Connection (EEPC) in Idea StatiCa and Stiffness Analysis

    Requirements
Basic civil engineering knowledge (Theory of Structures/Structural Analysis) is required.

    Description
In this course, we will deal with the classification of joints based on stiffness according to Indian Code IS 800:2007 and Eurocode 1993-1-8. After discussing the basic topics of strength and stiffness of joints, we will focus on joint stiffness classification. A Beam-Column steel connection shall be modeled in IDEA StatiCa software for stiffness analysis. The Stiffness Analysis results shall be employed in ETABS for global analysis of a Portal Frame. The Course Structure includes:
    i. Understanding basic concepts on fixed, rigid, and pinned joints; Moment and Rigid Connections
ii. Determination of Joint Stiffness as per IS 800:2007 and EN 1993-1-8
iii. Joint Stiffness Classification in IDEA StatiCa
iv. Modeling of Extended End Plate Connection (EEPC) in Idea StatiCa and Stiffness Analysis
    v. Use of results of Stiffness Analysis in global analysis
ETABS and IDEA StatiCa are the two major software used in this course. Stiffness Analysis shall be performed in IDEA StatiCa whereas ETABS will be used to perform global analysis of a portal frame. Any civil engineering student with fundamental knowledge of the Theory of Structures and Structural Analysis will be able to understand the contents of this course. This course shall prove to be of significance to beginners in Structural Engineering and Structural Steel Design.
    Who this course is for:
Beginners in Structural Engineering, especially Structural Steel designers.
