Серия "Электронный запасник Государственной Публичной Исторической библиотеки России" представляет издания из фондов Отдела Редких книг библиотеки. Отдел редких книг был создан в 1922 году как отдел библиотеки Исторического музея. В 1938 году все фонды отдела, за исключением рукописей и старопечатных книг, были переданы в Историческую библиотеку. Само название "Отдел Редких книг" говорит о необходимости особого режима хранения и использования книг этого отдела в силу их уникальности. Благодаря современным технологиям издания, существующие ныне в ограниченном числе экземпляров, ветхие и малотиражные, будучи перенесены на электронные носители, становятся доступными широкому кругу читателей.
Электронная копия издания позволяет ознакомиться не только с содержанием, но и с внешним видом книги, перелистать ее страницы, рассмотреть подробно пометки и иллюстрации, создавая иллюзию общения с реальным книжным экземпляром.

The Electronic Archive of The State Historical Public Library of Russia holds editions from the archive of the Department of Rare Books of the Library. The Department of Rare Books was created in 1922 as a department of the library of the Historical Museum. In 1938 all items of the department, except for manuscripts and early printed books, were transferred to the Historical library. The name Department of Rare Books implies the necessity for special storage and use of the books of the department because of their uniqueness.
Using modern technologies the editions, that exist now in limited number of copies and sometimes in poor condition, are being transferred to digital media allowing them to become accessible to a broader audience of readers. These electronic, digital editions allow not only content, but appearance, by browsing through pages, illustrations and markings, to be available to the reader creating the illusion of a real interaction with the original historic material.
