Exclusive re-issue of Mari Boine’s legendary album “Gula Gula”!
For more than 30 years, Sami-Norwegian folk pioneer Mari Boine has brought indigenous culture to the forefront of folk and world music. She condensed her visions of cultural and environmental activism in her lengendary album Gula Gula, carrying the flame of the Norwegian Sami culture. Originally released on her own label and later by Peter Gabriel's Real World Records, "Gula Gula" won Mari her first Spellemannprisen (Norwegian Grammy Award) in 1989.
For this exclusive By Norse re-issue set for release in December 2023, the original recording tapes from 1989 were located and two previously unreleased tracks from the Gula Gula studio sessions were discovered. The two songs have been mixed by the original producer Tellef Kvifte, and the full album remastered by Robin Schmidt.
This edition includes the authentic producer notes, and the artwork was re-envisioned by the original designer Madla Hruza.

The colours of The Magical Forest glow in this remarkable recording which brings together Sinikka Langeland’s Norwegian-Finnish-Swedish Starflowers quintet with the singers of the Trio Mediӕval. It’s an inspired concept: the Trio Mediӕval, with their affinity for folk music and their unique vocal blend, adapt themselves ideally to Sinikka’s sound-world, which is once archaic, timeless and contemporary. The quintet members, all bandleaders in their own right, are amongst the most characterful players in Scandinavia today, and Sinikka sets them free to improvise around her cycle of songs, built upon myths and legends of the world tree.

Hard on the heels of his critically-lauded - and distortion-saturated - collaboration with rock players in Lumen Drones comes the next fine album from Norway’s Hardanger fiddle master. His new band makes a quieter but richly creative musical proposal. All the musicians are well-known in diverse contexts. Mats Eilertsen’s elegant bass has been heard on ECM recordings with Tord Gustavsen, Trygve Seim, Wolfert Brederode and Jacob Young. Håkon Stene is a Norwegian contemporary classical percussionist of distinction. Harmonium player Sigbjørn Apeland collaborated with Økland previously on Lysøen - Hommage à Ole Bul. And new music saxophonist Rolf-Erik Nylstrøm has played extensively with Frode Haltli in the trio Poing…

A beautiful tribute to Compendium Records – first a store, then an important label in Norway during the 70s – home to a wicked range of jazz and progressive rock sounds! Compendium's store had a great reputation for bringing in imports from the UK and beyond – especially some of the more important leftfield artists of those crucial early 70s underground years. So when the label got its start, it was actually with a Henry Cow album – before then branching out into work from some local talents, and some important jazz rock material as well. The package is very nicely done – words and images of the store and label at their height – with tracks that include "Oslo" by Henry Cow, "Watching Everybody Else" by Blow Out, "Spanish Knee" by Hugh Hopper, "Street Talk" by Vanessa, "Steam" by Karin Krog & Archie Shepp, "Peace In The World" by Charles Austin & Joe Gallivan, "Come Down" by Saluki, and "Seven Drones" by Hopper, Dean, Tippett, & Gallivan

In retrospect, the musical direction each of these artists would take was already becoming clear. Since that winter, each of them has found an individual manner of expression based on his or her respective national culture. Mari Boine created an inlet for the musical culture of her people, the Sami, into the great river of World Music, developing a very personal idiom and style from the Sami traditions. Inna Zhelannaya continued to work on her own texts and songs, initially still in collaboration with the popular Russian group Alliance, which accompanied her on this album, later with other Russian musicians.
