Genre: Jazz, Modern Jazz | Label: ECM (ecm 1994) | Year: 2007

From the first notes of "Just Now," an attentive listener will recognize that A Long Story is going to be something special. The seemingly simple, Middle-Eastern tinged melody is treated with odd phrase lengths, keeping the listener decidedly off-balance, despite the direct harmonic progressions. Pianist Anat Fort's improvisations on the tune float around the barely felt pulse creating an atmosphere of calm, serene beauty, which nevertheless is quite taut beneath the surface. Following the Grammy-nominated 'Distances' comes the eagerly awaited second ECM album from the British-German-Italian trio fronted by singer Norma Winstone, with pianist Glauco Venier and reedsman Klaus Gesing. Alongside their own pieces, the musicians play songs from Mexico's Armando Manzanero to Armenia's Komitas, to Wayne Shorter. Textures, colours and rhythms are drawn from scattered, surprising sources. (Source: amazon.co.uk)

Genre: Jazz, Vocal Jazz, modern creative | Label: ECM (ecm 1524) | Year: 1994

Endresen's vocals sound unnervingly close to those of folk-rock singer Sandy Denny on this song cycle of sorts, originally commissioned by a Norwegian jazz festival. Themes of traveling and a vaguely mythic air (the songs were originally titled "Pagan Pilgrimage") predominate, but the chief pleasures are the haunting and resonant qualities of Endresen's voice. Genre: Jazz, Modern Jazz | Label: Jazz Eyes | Year: 2007

With longstanding band-mates Doug Weiss and Bill Stewart by his side, Kevin's brilliant new release on JazzEyes ‘You’ve Got a Friend’ features luminous re-workings of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, McCartney’s “Fool on The Hill” and the CD’s opening title track, Carole King’s radiant classic ‘You’ve Got a Friend’. Several new arrangements follow including Monk’s masterpiece ‘Think of One’, probing meditations on both Bob Dorough’s whimsical “Nothing Like You” and the Tobias classic “Sweet and Lovely” and concluding with a brilliant harmonic revision of Charlie Parker’s be-bop classic, “Cheryl”. More than just a concert recording, Beirach's performance at Maybeck is a snapshot of the artist in a moment of creation. Not yet an elder statesman, but no longer a newcomer to the world of jazz, Beirach stands now at a plateau, from which he can look back on the traditions that defined his early development - the textural genius of Miles Davis, the technical rigors of European classical repertoire, the probing harmonic imagination of Bill Evans - while also mapping the horizons of his own distinctive style. Genre: Jazz, Hard Bop, Post-Bop | Label: Windham Hill Jazz | Year: 1989

This enjoyable effort, one of pianist Denny Zeitlin's infrequent recordings, has four trio selections recorded with bassist Joel DiBartolo and drummer Peter Donald (the other performances from the same sessions comprise Zeitlin's earlier Windham Hill Jazz release Trio) plus four 1989 duets with bassist David Friesen. Six Zeitlin originals are joined by Friesen's "Underlying," Ornette Coleman's obscure "Broadway Blues" and the standard "Blues In The Night." Harmonically advanced and thought-provoking yet mostly swinging music. ~Scott Yanow, allmusic.com

Genre: Jazz, Classic crossover | Label: ECM (ecm 2155) | Year: 2010

Dino Saluzzi’s new music for orchestra and soloists characteristically glides through the borders between the idioms. A Saluzzi composition can, from one minute to the next, be “serious”, “popular”, “traditional”, “experimental -, even if these style divisions barely exist for a bandoneonist who prefers to see his work as “simply an expression of innocence”. “El Encuentro” was recorded live in Amsterdam with the Metropole Orchestra in February 2009 and is issued in time for Dino’s 75th birthday in May. …All of the music is taken at a thoughtful pace and is quite lyrical and melodic. Copland often sounds as if he is thinking aloud yet each of his "musical sentences" flows logically into the next one, forming a suite of sorts. The results could be superior background music but, if played at a louder volume, one can really get into Copland's thoughts and ideas. This is thought-provoking music that deserves that close a listen. ~Scott Yanow, allmusic.com

Ever-adventurous pianist Marilyn Crispell in quietly exploratory improvised duets with clarinetist David Rothenberg (in his ECM debut). Rothenberg studied with Jimmy Giuffre and Joe Maneri, amongst others, is active as player-composer and also well known as an author and naturalist, his books including “Why Birds Sing” and “Thousand Mile Song” (an investigation of the music of whales), and the titles here reflect also on the natural world. Tracks include “The Hawk and the Mouse”, “Owl Moon” and “Still Life with Woodpeckers”. (Source: ecmrecords.com)

Genre: Jazz, Modern Jazz, Avant-Garde | Label: ECM (ecm 2027) | Year: 2007

Vignettes is Crispell's first solo album for ECM. As with her previous work for the label, she explores the lyrical, poetical, intimate side of her playing. The goal here, in performing fixed pieces or improvisations, is to play music from the heart and to rule out any habitual or stylized expression. The result is a remarkably pure musical journey, and one that traverses different territories, atmospheres, and scopes of feeling. (Source: amazon.com)

Harmony is Mr. Copland's great strength, and he colors in most of these songs with muted, shifting hues. Recorded and produced with an obsessive standard of intimacy it revels in poetic self-containment. (Nate Chinen, New York Times)

That Peacock should be capable of music with this much dignity should be no surprise; neither should it be especially surprising from Copland who, while a late starter on his chosen instrument, continues to develop a personal approach that combines the best of American and European traditions. What It Says is another fine recording from France’s Sketch Records, a label that is joining a select group of independents with an uncompromising sense of artistry, and a distinctive personality; Copland and Peacock have managed to capture the essence of the material in a programme that is rich in ambience and deep in emotion. ~John Kelman, allaboutjazz.com

The Portuguese pianist Bernardo Sassetti definitely deserves to be on the jazz radar on this side of the Atlantic Ocean.
The music on his new trio CD Motion is highly distilled and always evocative, occasionally enhanced by swirls and snippets of found sound, most notably bits of radio. The music (all originals except for an opening alt-rock cover and a closing classical-music cover) tends to the slow, mysterious and melancholy – but the disc nonetheless feels diverse and multi-faceted.

It's an intimate, home-studio recording of love songs – deep, almost painfully heartfelt – and so good it will be sure to top most best-of lists. There's no tricksiness, just the woody thump of Haden's bass adding authority to Jarrett's tender, faithful chording. "For All We Know" is a Desert Island Discs cert; "Body & Soul" is done almost jauntily; the closing "Don't Ever Leave Me" a bitter sweet miracle. If you buy only one album this year, etc. ~Phil Johnson in The Independent, 2 May 2010
