The album's title comes from the lyrics of the Beatles's cover of the Chuck Berry song, "Rock and Roll Music", which was originally released on the studio album Beatles for Sale. Dave Grusin was nominated for a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for his cover of "Yesterday" on the album.

This Christmas jazz album has a wide variety of generally enjoyable performances by 16 different groups. High points include a funny version of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by singers Dianne Reeves and Lou Rawls, a Herbie Hancock-Eliane Elias piano duet on "I'll Be Home for Christmas," and Holly Cole's "Christmas Blues." The other performers include Herb Alpert with Jeff Lorber, Fourplay (featuring Lee Ritenour), Diana Krall, Stanley Clarke, Michael Franks, the Brecker Brothers, Cassandra Wilson, John McLaughlin, Steps Ahead, Anita Baker (out of place but okay on "The Christmas Song"), Dave Koz, and Dr. John. Although not a classic release, most of the performances are rewarding.

Although The Moment followed four years after Kenny G's blockbuster Breathless, the saxophonist didn't change his approach at all during his time off. Kenny G remains a sweet, melodic instrumentalist, who works entirely in lush, slick adult contemporary pop settings. His playing has improved somewhat in those four years – he soars and dives with effortless skill, and his vibrato remains fleet and elegant – yet after The Moment is finished, you wish that he had tried some new musical territories. That said, it is true that The Moment ranks second to only Breathless in terms of sheer consistency in Kenny G's catalog, thanks to the sustained vision of producer Babyface. Of particular note are the two vocal collaborations (Babyface's "Everytime I Close My Eyes," Toni Braxton's "That Somebody Was You"), which are the best duets to yet appear on any of Kenny G's records.

David William Sanborn (born July 30, 1945) is an American alto saxophonist. Though Sanborn has worked in many genres, his solo recordings typically blend jazz with instrumental pop and R&B. He released his first solo album Taking Off in 1975, but has been playing the saxophone since before he was in high school. One of the most commercially successful American saxophonists to earn prominence since the 1980s, Sanborn is described by critic Scott Yannow as "the most influential saxophonist on pop, R&B, and crossover players of the past 20 years." He is often identified with radio-friendly smooth jazz, but he has expressed a disinclination for the genre and his association with it. Collection includes: Sanborn (1976); Promise Me The Moon (1977); Heart To Heart (1978); Hideaway (1980); Voyeur (1981); As We Speak (1982).

After two LPs with little or no energy, Sade demonstrated some intensity and fire on her third release. Whether that was just an attempt to change the pace a bit or a genuine new direction, she had more animation in her delivery on such songs as "Haunt Me," "Give It Up," and the hit "Paradise." Not that she was suddenly singing in a soulful or bluesy manner; rather, Sade's dry and introspective tone now had a little more edge, and the lyrics were ironic as well as reflective. This was her third consecutive multi-platinum album, and it matched the two-million-plus sales level of her debut.

One of the most well-known Japanese jazz musicians of his generation, Sadao Watanabe is an adept, bop-influenced saxophonist with a deep love of Brazilian bossa nova. He initially gained global fame in the 1960s with Bossa Nova Concert and Sadao Meets Brazilian Friends, showcasing his warm tone and lyrical, swinging sound. His subsequent recordings, highlighted by 1974's Round Trip, 1984's Rendezvous, and 1999's Remembrance, found him traversing such varied styles as funk, fusion, and crossover pop. Since the 2000s, Watanabe has focused largely on acoustic post-bop, Brazilian traditions, and straight-ahead jazz, as on the 2017 orchestral concert album Encore!

Big Girl is the third album by Dutch alto saxophonist Candy Dulfer. Prior to its release, she had been working mainly with Ulco Bed. She was impressed, however, with Thomas Bank, an up-and-coming producer and keyboard player. This work marks the transition between the two producers and as a result has a much more funky style and tries to incorporate elements of rap and hip hop into contemporary jazz. The album features a collaboration with Trijntje Oosterhuis, on the track "Funkyness", before Trijntje became widely known as a singer. The album is mainly instrumental. According to her official biography, the title of the album was an inside joke, referring to her father Hans Dulfer's album Big Boy and indicating that she had grown up and was in charge of her own career. The album peaked at #28 in the Dutch album chart.

On Dr. John's first major-label effort, and first vocal studio album in ten years, he performs a set of pop standards including Cole Porter's "Love for Sale" and Johnny Mercer's "Accentuate the Positive." After starting out with a wild stage act and unusual costumes, Dr. John has evolved into a vocal stylist and piano virtuoso, which makes the idea of doing this sort of material appealing. And he does it well, turning out a leisurely duet with Rickie Lee Jones on "Makin' Whoopee" that won a Grammy (Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Duo or Group), and giving sad feeling to "My Buddy." Maybe he has changed since the Gris Gris days, but even a mellowed Dr. John is a tasty one.

The first solo release from Breeze McKrieth, known for his work over many years with Light Of The World, Beggar & Co and The Brit Funk Association. Highly regarded for his unique style of rhythm guitar playing, the album focuses more on his lead guitar. With influences taken from bands like Caldera, Crusaders and Santana, Breeze embellishes the music, much of which are his own composition, in a style that shows his affinity with his instrument. Joined on the album by many of his stalwart fellow musicians through the years there are many surprises throughout. As well as long time friends and colleagues David Baptiste, saxophone, Kenny Wellington, trumpet and flugelhorn there is great contribution by Toby Baker, Peter Hinds and Luismi Valles on keyboards, Pat Clahar on saxophone, Rolando Domingo, trumpet, Camelle Hinds, Ernie McKone, bass and Billy Osborne on drums. The songs show a different side to the music usually associated with Breeze and are clearly chosen on a more personal and introspective level, as showcased in tracks like ‘Return To Valencia’ and This Is Paradise’. The cover versions in the main are interpreted in different ways to the original version and crafted in a manner befitting the direction of the album.
