Harmonia Mundi has a real knack for taking old, oft-recorded classics and breathing new life into them. This is largely thanks not only to HM's marvelous sound quality, but to the artists who the people at HM employ on the label's roster. For HM, Rene Jacobs has interpreted old-favorite Mozart operas with unmatched vitality, Konrad Junghanel has done it with Bach cantatas, Andrew Manze with Mozart's instrumental works, and Phillipe Herreweghe with the larger scale choral works of Bach.

I think I can safely claim to speak for many Hungarian musicians, when I say that from our childhood on, for decades, Richter’s concerts were the greatest musical experience we had.. In addition to his indescribable personal aura, his unique physical and intellectual characteristics, the simplicity, thoughtfulness and honesty of his approach supplied us for years with the strength and the desire to study and make music.- ~ Dezső Ránki

Mozart: Piano Sonata in A minor K310, Variations in D major on a Menuet by Duport K573, Concerto in E flat major for two pianos K365, Sonata in D major for two pianos K448, Fugue in C minor for two pianos K426, Quintet in E flat major for piano and winds K452
Beethoven: Piano Concerto No.1 in C major Op.15, Piano Concerto No.2 in B flat major Op.19, Piano Concerto No.3 in C minor Op.37, Piano Concerto No.4 in G major Op.58

This 35 cd box set contains the pianist's complete solo and concerted discs for the Vox, Turnabout, and Vanguard labels, recorded prior to the long affiliation with Philips that helped cement his international career. Although Brendel generally does not look kindly upon his distant discographical past (he apparently "disowns" his world-premiere Prokofiev Fifth Concerto that closes disc 35), he certainly has little for which to apologize here, musically and pianistically speaking.

Between 1965 and 1967 Benjamin Britten and Sviatoslav Richter teamed up at the Aldeburgh Festival for piano duo programs that were taped by the BBC for future broadcast. Music and Arts brought out this material on several CD issues, which stemmed from excellent tape sources. The selections on Decca's "official" release sound marginally fuller with less tape hiss. Do the performances live up to their legend? In most ways, yes.

Recorded: 1963, Leipzig Gewandhaus | Released : 1998 | Label: PACD 96031
Sviatoslav Richter (piano)

This recording preserves the complete concert of November 28, 1963 at the Leipzig Gewandhaus. It is the only published recording of one of Richter’s favorite programs: the last three Sonatas of Beethoven. While Richter played this music throughout most of his career and programmed these three Sonatas together as late as 1991, this recording is the only one ever issued with all three as performed at a single concert.
