PROGRAM HISTORY: During early 1945. with the Allied WWII victory eminent and capitalizing on the lessons learned in combat. AF planners realized that many force structure changes would be needed in the new post-war world. Priorities began surfacing almost immediately as to what aircraft types could best serve the country during the post-war era. It was determined by the War Department that (1) there would be a need for a long-range fighter capable of escorting bombers over enemy territory; (2) the integration of jet propulsion into the basic design criteria of all new combat aircraft would be a certainty; and (3) an all-weather capability to provide ground troops with aerial protection under a variety of meteorological conditions would be mandatory (the inability to provide air cover during the disastrous early stages of the 'Battle of the Bulge' was foremost on their minds).
