    Freud dénonce l'illusion religieuse et oppose religion et psychanalyse en mettant dos à dos le prêtre et le psychanalyste. Il met aussi en cause l'éducation religieuse donnée aux enfants en bas âge. Cette édition est accompagnée d'un appareil critique pour faciliter la lecture.

    L'illusion à laquelle Freud s'attaque ici est la religion. Selon le père de la psychanalyse, nous avons créé les dieux, la Providence et la morale divine pour répondre au désir archaïque et infantile d'être rassurés - contre l'incompréhensibilité du monde, l'angoisse de la mort et la violence des rapports humains. Toutefois, la religion n'a rendu les hommes ni plus moraux ni plus heureux. Pour Freud, elle a fait son temps : grâce à la science, l'humanité va sortir de l'enfance, et l'illusion s'écroulera.

    Mais sur quoi fonder alors la moralité ? En privant l'homme des croyances religieuses, ne risque-t-on pas de basculer dans le chaos, Enfin, la science n'apparaît-elle pas elle-même comme un nouvel objet de croyance ?
