A black hole is a region in spacetime (space in its four dimensions, which is the three dimensions plus time) that has a gravitational pull so strong that nothing - not even particles or waves of electromagnetic radiation such as light - can escape from it. General relativity predicts that a compressed mass of a certain amount can distort spacetime to form a black hole. The boundary of the region that cannot be escaped is called the event horizon. Although crossing the boundary of the event horizon has enormous effects on the fate and conditions of any object it crosses, no observable characteristics of this region appear. A black hole acts as a perfect black body, because it does not reflect any light. Moreover, quantum field theory in curved spacetime predicts the emission of Hawking radiation in event horizons, with the same spectrum as that of a black body with a temperature inversely proportional to its mass. This temperature is on the order of a billionth of a kelvin for stellar-mass black holes, which means that it is impossible to observe.
