Galaxies and Cosmology

Galaxies and Cosmology by Françoise Combes , Patrick Boissé , Alain Mazure , Alain Blanchard
English | PDF | 1995 | 415 Pages | ISBN : 3540589333 | 37.7 MB

Unique in its breadth of coverage and level of presentation, this textbook provides more on the nature of galaxies, extragalactic objects, the large-scale structure of the Universe, and cosmology than is available in general textbooks on astronomy. It remains, however, accessible to advanced undergraduate students. One or more chapters are devoted to each of the following: the classification and morphology of galaxies; the galactic interstellar medium; galactic kinematics; elliptical, spiral, and barred spiral galaxies; the interactions between galaxies; extragalactic radio sources, quasars and their line spectra, and other active galactic nuclei; the formation of galaxies; the Universe as a whole; and cosmology.

Peter Gabriel Bergmann started his work on general relativity in 1936 when he moved from Prague to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Bergmann collaborated with Einstein in an attempt to provide a geometrical unified field theory of gravitation and electromagnetism. Within this program they wrote two articles together: A. Einstein and P. G. Bergmann, Ann. Math. 39, 685 (1938) ; and A. Einstein, V. Bargmann and P. G. Bergmann, Th. von Karman Anniversary Volume 212 (1941).

Habent sua Jata colloquia. The present volume has its ongms in a spring 1984 international workshop held, under the auspices of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, by The Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Ideas of Tel-Aviv University in cooperation with The Van Leer Jerusalem Foundation. It contains twelve of the twenty papers presented at the workshop by the twenty-six participants. As Proceedings of conferences go, it is a good representative of the genre, sharing in the main characteristics of its ilk. It may even be one of the rare instances of a book of Proceed ings whose descriptive title applies equally well to the workshop's topic and to the interrelations between. the various papers it includes. Tension and Accommodation are the key words.

Dynamical Systems and Cosmology by A. A. Coley

Dynamical systems theory is especially well-suited for determining the possible asymptotic states (at both early and late times) of cosmological models, particularly when the governing equations are a finite system of autonomous ordinary differential equations.

Fundamentals of Cosmology

Fundamentals of Cosmology by James Rich
English | PDF (True) | 2001 | 311 Pages | ISBN : 3642074618 | 28.16 MB

This is a textbook intended for students and researchers who wish to under stand the physics of standard "big bang" cosmology and how it is used to interpret the most recent observations. It is based on courses given over the last seven years to beginning graduate students at the University of Paris and to advanced undergraduates at l'Ecole Poly technique. Since the great major ity of these students did not intend to become professional cosmologists, I have emphasized subjects that should be of general interest. Progress in observations over the last ten years has been truly astounding and a new textbook might be justified simply to report on recent break throughs. The traditional successes of modern cosmology are well-known. Among these are the dynamical understanding of the universal expansion, the prediction of the cosmic microwave background radiation, and the calculation of the abundances of the light elements. To these we can add new observa tions that suggest that we are beginning the era of "precision cosmology.

Relativistic Cosmology: An Introduction

Relativistic Cosmology: An Introduction by Jean Heidmann
English | PDF | 1980 | 170 Pages | ISBN : 3540101381 | 11.2 MB

Since the first French edition of the book emphasized rather the solid facts of Cosmology than the detailed discussions of controversial results, relatively few revisions were necessary for the English edition. They were made early in 1979 and affected about 5% of the text. The main revisions referred to the distance scale, the dlstribution of galaxies, the X-ray observations of clusters, the cosmic time evolution of quasars and radiogalaxies and the 3 K radiation. A new short bibliography presents the recent articles and the latest proceedings of Symposia; from these the reader can easily trace a more complete list of refer ences. I am happy to thank Professor Beiglbock for suggestions he made to improve Part lIon Spaces of Constant Curvature, and Drs. S. and J. Mitton for translating the manuscript into English. I also thank with pleasure Marie-Ange Sevin for correcting the final version. J. Heidmann March 1980, Meudon, France Preface The aim of this book is to present the fundamentals of cosmology.

Cosmology, Physics, and Philosophy: Including a New Theory of Aesthetics by Benjamin Gal-Or
English | PDF | 1987 | 556 Pages | ISBN : 1461596637 | 59.3 MB

What is unorthodox in this book? Much has happened in the last few years, especially in terms of the somewhat surpris ing rate at which the theories presented herein have been gaining increasing acceptance and support even by the most skeptical professionals. Nevertheless, the purpose of this up-dated Preface is not to tell the biographical and acceptance story behind this book, but to bring together some non-physical and non technical conclusions for those readers who find the physico-mathematical sections of this book too difficult to follow. A secondary purpose is to present here some newer conclu sions, especially in general philosophy and in aesthetics. Yet, the main physico philosophical conclusions presented in this book are not to be summarized here. For that purpose one must tum to the text itself. * * * The theories presented here have been developed in total isolation.
