This book can simply be summed up as the thermodynamics for mechanical engineering students. It gives the fundamentals of engineering thermodynamics and their application to particular fluids and the ways in which work and heat transfer are affected.

Part I is devoted to the principles of thermodynamics, Part II to applications of the principles to particular fluids, and Parts III and IV respectively to ways in which work and heat transfers are effected. This scheme leaves it open to the lecturer to choose any preferred order of presentation, but also provides the student with a book which enables principle to be distinguished from application.

 Thermodynamics is a branch of science that deals
with energy in all its forms and the laws governing the
transformation of energy from one form to another. The
form of energy are mechanical, thermal or heat,
chemical, electrical etc.
 Thermodynamics deals with the behavior of gases
and vapours i.e., the working substances when
subjected to variation of temperature and pressure and
the relationship between heat energy and mechanical
energy commonly referred to as work.
Energy transformation takes place when a substance
undergoes a change from one condition to another in a
process. The processes are heating or cooling and
expansion or compression in the cylinder or passages
with or without production or supply of mechanical
work.

Starting with the basic concepts, the book gradually discusses important topics such as entropy, thermodynamic availability, properties of steam, real and ideal gas, power cycles and chemical equilibrium in increasing order of complexity. A lucid exposition of the fundamental concepts of thermodynamics in the book along with numerous worked-out examples and well-labelled detailed illustrations are sure to instil in the beginners a holistic understanding of the subject.
