    Under den judiska påsken 2002 slog en av Hamas självmordsbombare till mot ett hotell i Netanya i Israel. Ett av de många dödsoffren var författaren Bernt Hermeles mamma. Hermele växte upp i början av 1950-talet i ett judiskt invandrarhem på Södermalm i Stockholm. Inbäddad i det ortodoxt judiska skulle det dröja ända till femtonårsåldern innan han för första gången steg över tröskeln till ett icke-judiskt hem. Men för Hermele blev Gazakriget 2014 en brytpunkt. Kriget ställde honom frågande till den starka lojaliteten mot Israel inom dagens judiska minoritet. Följden blev hätsk kritik från den gemenskap han tillhört under hela sitt liv och starten på många tankar kring komplexiteten i sitt judiska arv. Judejävel är Hermeles personliga resa som inte väjer för de svåra frågorna kring identitet och samhörighet.
