The book Pain: Managing the Unmanageable provides in-depth knowledge about the new ideas, new technology, and newer groups of analgesics and innovative surgical interventions for managing pain. Pain shapes its victim’s living style and also processes one’s thoughts which are difficult to modify. Pain is defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with tissue damage which can be due to injury, anxiety and fear. The intensity of pain perceived is proportional to the amount of tissue damage. Pain has many attributes of fatigue or physical and mental exhaustion. It can be classified as acute, chronic and referral pain. Pain travels through specific pain-generating nerve endings which are distributed throughout the skin and also reach blood vessels, muscles, tendons, joints and internal organs enclosed within the abdomen or stomach. Medication is the common approach to pain and these can be analgesics (opiates and NSAIDs), anesthetics (topical and general), etc. Human body produce various neurotransmitters that help in the modulation of pain. Also, non-pharmacological modalities in addition to food therapy have been tried by humans to get freedom from pain. In addition, analgesic and anesthetic are discussed.
