As its name suggests, rock mechanics represents the meeting of two different do mains: material mechanics and Earth sciences.
As an applied science, it is of prime interest to geoscientists (geologists, geophysicists, civil and mining engineers) who by training, have often given relatively greater prominence to the descriptive and experimental aspect rather than theoretical explanations. Influenced by excessive complexity and insufficient data, the geomechanical engineer has all too often contented himself with only the simplest constitutive laws, thus masking a certain ignorance in regard to mechanics. By so doing, he has unconsciously restricted the field of action of rock mechanics by assigning it far too narrow limits.
