The F-111 "Aardvark" was not only a controversial aircraft from the start, many, including the Navy didn't want it, and would become known as "McNamara' s folly" (the Secretary of the Department of Defense). He wanted all the services to have basically the same aircraft, with the highest percentage of parts interchangeably. The Air Force version had its growing pains, like any new aircraft, but as Lou Drendel shows in one of the first books produced on this aircraft, even with three aircraft lost out of the original six sent to Southeast Asia in "Operation Combat Lancer", the aircraft became the premier strike aircraft in the world. In this early book, we see the development of both Air Force & Navy versions, and why the Navy version didn't come to fruition, being replaced by the fantastic F-14 Tomcat. Flown by the USAF and the Australian Air Force only, the F-111 came to have s great reputation. Lou Drendel gives us the early scoop on this aircraft, another of his gems of his artwork, line drawings, and a collection of great photographs.
