    L'empereur Julien (332-363) a rédigé ce pamphlet à Antioche, un an avant sa mort tragique. Il y dénonce avec vigueur la prétention à l'universalité de la petite secte chrétienne et entend redonner leurs lettres de noblesse aux cultes païens qui commençaient alors à décliner.

    Défense du paganisme (contre les Galiléens)

    C'est à Antioche, quelques mois avant sa mort tragique, que l'Empereur Julien (331-363) rédige un pamphlet Contre les Galiléens, qui dénonce avec vigueur la prétention à l'universalité de la petite secte chrétienne. Mais au-delà de la critique de cette nouvelle religion, c'est à une véritable apologie du paganisme qu'il se livre.

    Il n'était alors pas trop tard pour empêcher le triomphe annoncé du christianisme, mais le règne de Julien fut beaucoup trop bref. S'il l'avait emporté, la face du monde en eût été changée et il ne serait pas resté dans l'Histoire comme l'Apostat…

    Rétrospectivement, ce texte apparaît donc comme le chant du cygne de la religion grecque.
