    Ce document retrace le déroulement du débarquement en Provence du 15 août au 12 septembre 1944.

    Autant le débarquement en Normandie du 6 juin 1944 reste dans toutes les mémoires, autant celui de Provence, commencé le 15 août 1944, demeure méconnu. Jusqu'au 12 septembre, neuf cent mille hommes, cent soixante-dix mille véhicules et quatre millions de tonnes de matériel et d'approvisionnements débarquèrent sur la côte méditerranéenne pour contribuer à la libération du territoire national et à la victoire finale. Au coeur de l'action, la célèbre 1ère armée française du général de Lattre de Tassigny, qui représentait massivement la France combattante. Elle était composée, dans sa très grande majorité, par des unités de l'armée d'Afrique qu'avaient préservées les généraux Weygand et Juin. Équipées de façon américaine selon les accords d'Anfa en 1943, ces troupes qui venaient de s'illustrer dans les campagnes de Tunisie et d'Italie refoulèrent peu à peu l'ennemi par une série de combats éclatants.
