    Traduit pour la première fois en français, le journal intime du compositeur a été à l'origine offert par Cosima Liszt pour son amant Richard. Il y consigne ses états d'âme dans des essais, esquisses en prose, poèmes, ébauches musicales, etc. L'original est conservé à Bayreuth.

    Objet entouré d'un profond mystère pendant près d'un siècle, Le Carnet brun de Richard Wagner n'est publié en allemand qu'en 1975. Cet épais cahier relié de cuir marron fut offert en 1865 par Cosima Liszt von Bülow à son amant lors d'une longue séparation pour qu'il y consigne ses pensées. De journal intime auquel Wagner confesse ses déboires sentimentaux, son contenu prend ensuite la forme d'un carnet de notes traitant des événements de son quotidien - les difficultés rencontrées avec son mécène Louis II de Bavière, la perte de ses amis… -, préparant son autobiographie ou bien accueillant ses réflexions sur Beethoven, des poèmes, la première esquisse en prose pour Parsifal ou des écrits divers sur les sujets musicaux, sociaux ou scientifiques.

    Pour la première fois, les curieux comme les mélomanes pourront lire, enfin traduite en français, l'intégralité de ces pages qui n'étaient pas destinées à être publiées.
