After an introduction i.a. stating that there is no Egyptian word for "sport" the first chapter is devoted to the match in ancient Egypt. Owing to the sources only very little can be known about the subject. The next chapter deals with various kinds of sports such as wrestling, about which there is much information, boxing, stick-fighting, swimming, rowing, the high jump, etc. Particularly to archery and riding there are many references. Then the authors discuss sporting games, including games for boys and girls: those with balls, games of skill, etc. The following chapters discuss successively: hunting and fishing; relations between religion and sport, e.g. the "Kultlauf" and gymnastic and acrobatic dances; sport as part of the education; the king as sportsman. In a final chapter the well-known Giza stela of Amenophis II is dealt with.
The various subjects are well illustrated by drawings and photographs.
