Gathering Speed is the fourth studio album of the English progressive rock band, Big Big Train. It was released in 2004 by Treefrog Records. It is dedicated to the airmen and women who lost their lives in the Battle of Britain. The song The Road Much Further On was originally titled You Can't Draw Love. It was inspired by Spawton's then seven-year-old daughter. The album as a whole was a return to progressive rock for the band. It is the first album in which Sean Filkins recorded vocals, replacing Martin Read. It is also the only album in which Laura Murch recorded vocals, and the only Big Big Train album not to feature any songs solely written by Greg Spawton.

With the band currently in the early stages of working on a new studio album for release in 2024, Ingenious Devices features new versions of a trilogy of revered Big Big Train epic tracks - 'East Coast Racer', 'Brooklands' and 'Voyager' - about how mankind has used it's ingenuity to extend it's reach by the development and deployment of technology. The new versions feature an elite 17 piece string section recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London. Apart from the late David Longdon's lead vocals, which have been compiled from the original album sessions, East Coast Racer is a completely new studio version recorded by the line-up of the band as it was in 2019. 'Brooklands' features newly recorded drums, bass and bass pedals, while 'Voyager' includes additional guitar and violin. All three songs have been re-mixed for this release. Ingenious Devices also includes a previously unreleased orchestral piece called The Book of Ingenious Devices, which links East Coast Racer and Brooklands.

The Difference Machine is their 5th album. For those unfamiliar with the band, they hail from southwest England and began their career in the late 80's with a decidedly late 60's King Crimson sound (think In The Wake Of Poseidon). The Difference Machine hails back to that early Crimson sound, especially in the stop/start of the arrangements, the bass and drum production, and the usage of wind instruments such as alto and tenor saxophone, viola and predominant use of the mellotron. The classic prog arrangements are spiced up with some modern technology, including digital loops and industrial sounding distorted vocals…

What if Genesis had decided to go back to their progressive roots rather than a commercial direction in the 1980's? Of imagine if you will the notorious three reuniting to do likewise. The result might sound something like The Underfall Yard. You've got your mellotrons, twelve string guitars, a lead vocalist, David Longdon, who sounds just like Phil Collins (Phil called and he'd like his vocal style back), also the occasional flute.
After that Big Big Train starts to diverge from the old Genesis sound. David's flute playing is more reminiscent of Ian McDonald than Peter Gabriel. The bass work by Andy Poole is more complex than the basic bass of Mike Rutherford and reminds me more of Geddy Lee…

An epic progressive rock tour de force, Big Big Train's tenth studio album is its most ambitious yet. Breathing new life into traditional themes and creating a few new ones along the way, the crafts of melody and storytelling beat strongly at the heart of the Big Big Train and inform every track on Folklore. Featuring an eight piece band and brass quintet - augmented by a string quartet - the album provides a superb showcase for David Longdon's emotional vocals and the band's dramatic extended compositions.

A new release from Big Big Train is never just another release in the world of prog. Since 2009’s The Underfall Yard, the band has been one of the leading bands of third-wave prog, the signal marker and bellwether. Indeed, every release from Big Big Train for the past decade has manifested itself as a fundamental shift—a very rethinking of who and what we are as a community—of the genre itself. While there are innumerable great prog acts out there, none quite match Big Big Train when it comes to innovation, to creativity, and to cohesion…
