The first the world heard of Mortiis was his bassplaying in the norweigian BM band Emperor. With them he released "Wrath of the Tyrant" demo, "Emperor" Mini album, "As the Shadows Rise" 7". After that he decided to start a solo project, simply called Mortiis.
Having discovered the virtue of tunes, he crammed his second full length album The Smell of Rain with pounding melodies that bring to mind everyone from Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails through to the chanting choirs of Enigma. With the MTV-friendly likes of "Parasite God," "You Put a Hex On Me," and "Smell the Witch" casting their industrial spell, Mortiis soon found himself a superstar on the alternative goth scene.

Steven Ellison a.k.a. Flying Lotus (or FlyLo as he is called) got his start by crafting juicy, booming dubstep cuts for Cartoon Network to use in whichever way they deemed best (those commercials continue to impress and affect with every new idea).
Cosmogramma is an intricate, challenging record that fuses his loves– jazz, hip-hop, videogame sounds, IDM– into something unique. It's an album in the truest sense. Cosmogramma is conceived as a movement– bits of one song spill into the next, and its individual tracks make the most sense in the context of what surrounds them. In this sense, it feels almost like an avant-garde jazz piece, and so it takes more than a few listens to sink in– one or two spins and you're still at the tip of the iceberg.

Miranda Sex Garden was a band from London, England. Formed in 1990, when the members were studying vocal music at the Purcell School of music together and started singing 17th Century madrigals for money in the streets of London.. Over the years, their sound became increasingly dark and sophisticated. Around the time of this album, they said they wanted to create music that evoked a "seductive garden of earthly delights, full of color and chaos.

Gothic Rock | Beggars (UK) Records

Fields of the Nephilim are a semi-active English gothic rock/gothic metal band formed in Stevenage, Hertfordshire in 1984. The original line-up consisted of vocalist Carl McCoy, saxophonist Gary Whisker, Tony Pettitt on bass, guitarist Paul Wright and drummer Alexander "Nod" Wright. Following the release of the debut EP Burning the Fields, Whisker left the band to be replaced by Peter Yates as second guitarist. The band's name refers to a Biblical race of giants or angel-human hybrids, known as the Nephilim. Although they have not received substantial mainstream success, the band's seminal sound has proved highly influential, especially in the genre of gothic rock and, later on, gothic metal and rock noir.

Digital Mystery Tour is a five piece collective of composers living all over the world. It all started in Tokyo in 2000 when Stephane Holweck (Juno Reactor) & Michio Baba decided to collaborate and made a track together. After getting back to Europe, Guillaume Thevenin, Florian Seriot & Loic Vanpoucke joined the band. On a personal note, this is one of the better electronica albums out there and I find myself reaching out to this whenever I want to relax and just chill out.

In collaboration with Brendan Perry, Lisa Gerrard is half of the duo Dead Can Dance, which started releasing arty goth rock on the 4AD label in the mid-'80s. Gerrard began her solo career with the 1995 release The Mirror Pool, which contained a lot of work that wouldn't fit comfortably into the DCD oeuvre. Combining these fragments with music that she composed and arranged digitally before reconfiguring them into scores that could be performed, it also draws on a composition by Handel and traditional Iranian music.
