This book is written for academic engineering audiences, specifically for upperlevel or graduate classes, and for practicing engineers and geoscientists. The most of the material and examples are based on engineering quantities, specifically involving flow through permeable media and, even more specifically, permeability.

About half of the book is devoted to the diagnostic. This includes the usual tools such as histograms and measures of variability, along with some newer concepts, such as using geology to guide sampling and the role of variable additivity.
The other half is then aimed at methods for model development, once the important aspects of the geosystem behavior have been detected and quantified.
