    Franklin Beedle & Associates | August, 2002 | ISBN: 1887902821 | PDF | 5,47 Mb

This book has one huge drawback - As you go thru the exercises, altering files, moving files to other directories, and so forth, each chapter depends on what you did in the previous one. If you mess up bad enough and do not have a backup of your work, you will get into a mess. You HAVE to go thru this book in sequence for things to work right.

    The MIT Press | ISBN 026202506X | 2001 Year | PDF | 5,94 Mb | 400 Pages

"Pierre Baldi and Søren Brunak present the key machine learning approaches and apply them to the computational problems encountered in the analysis of biological data. The book is aimed at two types of researchers and students. First are the biologists and biochemists who need to understand new data-driven algorithms, such as neural networks and hidden Markov models, in the context of biological sequences and their molecular structure and function. Second are those with a primary background in physics, mathematics, statistics, or computer science who need to know more about specific applications in molecular biology."

Microsoft Windows scripting support has taken off recently, and Thomas Eck has done a lot of useful work at the cutting edge of this technology. In Windows NT/2000 ADSI Scripting for System Administration, he documents the Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI) as they apply to systems administrators interested in using Component Object Model (COM) objects written in Visual Basic to automate administrative tasks. Because this book is backed by such a considerable development effort, administrators of large Windows NT and Windows 2000 networks will be able to put its ADSI solutions to profitable use immediately.

Representations for Genetic and Evolutionary Algorithms, 2nd Edition

Representations for Genetic and Evolutionary Algorithms, 2nd Edition

Franz Rothlauf, «Representations for Genetic and Evolutionary Algorithms, 2nd Edition»
    Springer | ISBN 354025059X | 2006 Year | PDF | 4,99 Mb | 325 Pages

In the field of genetic and evolutionary algorithms (GEAs), a large amount of theory and empirical study has been focused on operators and test problems, while problem representation has often been taken as given. This book breaks with this tradition and provides a comprehensive overview on the influence of problem representations on GEA performance. The book summarizes existing knowledge regarding problem representations and describes how basic properties of representations, such as redundancy, scaling, or locality, influence the performance of GEAs and other heuristic optimization methods. Using the developed theory, representations can be analyzed and designed in a theory-guided matter. The theoretical concepts are used for solving integer optimization problems and network design problems more efficiently. The book is written in an easy-readable style and is intended for researchers, practitioners, and students who want to learn about representations. This second edition extends the analysis of the basic properties of representations and introduces a new chapter on the analysis of direct representations.

From Genes to Genomes: Concepts and Applications of DNA Technology

Jeremy W. Dale, Malcolm von Schantz, «From Genes to Genomes: Concepts and Applications of DNA Technology»
    John Wiley & Sons | ISBN 0471497827 | 2002 Year | PDF | 6,71 Mb | 372 Pages

Rapid advances in a collection of techniques referred to as gene technology, genetic engineering, recombinant DNA technology and gene cloning have pushed molecular biology to the forefront of the biological sciences. From Genes to Genomes: Concepts and Applications of DNA Technology will explain key ideas underlying the most central techniques in the context of the ways in which they are used.

The book opens with a brief review of the basic concepts of molecular biology, before moving on to describe the key molecular methods and how they fit together. This ranges from the cloning and study of individual genes to the sequencing of whole genomes, and the analysis of genome-wide information. Finally, the book moves on to consider some of the applications of these techniques, in biotechnology, medicine and agriculture, as well as in research that is causing the current explosion of knowledge across the biological sciences.

    Aparna V. Huzurbazar, «Flowgraph Models for Multistate Time-to-Event Data»
    Wiley-Interscience | ISBN 0471265144 | 2004 Year | PDF | 4,40 Mb | 270 Pages

A unique introduction to the innovative methodology of statistical flowgraphs. This book offers a practical, application-based approach to flowgraph models for time-to-event data. It clearly shows how this innovative new methodology can be used to analyze data from semi-Markov processes without prior knowledge of stochastic processes opening the door to interesting applications in survival analysis and reliability as well as stochastic processes. Unlike other books on multistate time-to-event data, this work emphasizes reliability and not just biostatistics, illustrating each method with medical and engineering examples. It demonstrates how flowgraphs bring together applied probability techniques and combine them with data analysis and statistical methods to answer questions of practical interest. Bayesian methods of data analysis are emphasized.

Firearms and Violence: A Critical Review

    Charles F. Wellford, «Firearms and Violence: A Critical Review»
    National Academy Press | ISBN 0309091241 | 2005 Year | PDF | 1,75 Mb | 328 Pages

For years proposals for gun control and the ownership of firearms have been among the most contentious issues in American politics. For public authorities to make reasonable decisions on these matters, they must take into account facts about the relationship between guns and violence as well as conflicting constitutional claims and divided public opinion. In performing these tasks, legislators need adequate data and research to judge both the effects of firearms on violence and the effects of different violence control policies.

William H. Press, Brian P. Flannery, Saul A. Teukolsky, William T. Vetterling, «Numerical Recipes in C: The Art of Scientific Computing, 2nd Edition»
    Cambridge University Press | ISBN 0521431085 | 1992 Year | PDF | 7,39 Mb | 1020 Pages

The product of a unique collaboration among four leading scientists in academic research and industry, Numerical Recipes is a complete text and reference book on scientific computing. In a self-contained manner it proceeds from mathematical and theoretical considerations to actual practical computer routines. With over 100 new routines bringing the total to well over 300, plus upgraded versions of the original routines, the new edition remains the most practical, comprehensive handbook of scientific computing available today.

"Numerical Recipes has been a staple in computing libraries for many years, and for good reason. It provides immediately usable implementations of all the workhorses of numerical computation, in production-quality form. Maybe there are better implementations out there, FFTW for example, but getting something to work correctly always comes before getting it to work fast. Numerical computation is a specialty, and vanishingly few of us are specialists. As a result, getting this much specialist knowledge for the price of a very few hours' wage, fully debugged and documented, is a great bargain."
