Patrick N. Allitt is Professor of History at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He was born and raised in central England and received his B.A. in British and European History from Oxford University. He earned his Ph.D. in American History from the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Allitt has served as a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard Divinity School and at the Princeton University Center for the Study of American Religion.
Professor Allitt is the author of five books and editor of a sixth. They include I'm the Teacher, You're the Student: A Semester in the University Classroom (2004), Religion in America Since 1945: A History (2003), Major Problems in American Religious History (2000), Catholic Converts: British and American Intellectuals Turn to Rome (1997), and Catholic Intellectuals and Conservative Politics in America (1993).
Professor Allitt is Director of Emory's Center for Teaching and Curriculum and former holder of the NEH/Arthur Blank Professorship of Teaching in the Humanities.
Professor Allitt visits Britain every summer, often to teach in American summer schools in Oxford, where he specializes in the history and architecture of Oxford itself.
