Pain is an essential sign of disease and attempts to treat physiological pain should not be done before it is determined that the pain not be a sign of a treatable disease.

When that has been ruled out, treatment of the pain can be initiated.

Acute pain can be treated successfully and safely by opioids and NSAIDs. The treatments that are in routine use for the common forms of physiological (acute) pain are many, and they differ mainly with regards to their side effects, costs, and the involvement of the person with pain that the individual methods require.

In general, the treatment for physiological pain is dominated by medications many of which can be obtained without a prescription, but pain medications that require a prescription are also in everyday use.
