Deadly Season: Analysis of the 2011 Tornado Outbreaks by Kevin M. Simmons , Daniel Sutter
English | PDF (True) | 2012 | 117 Pages | ISBN : 187822025X | 1.3 MB

In 2011, despite continued developments in forecasting, tracking, and warning technology, the United States was hit by the deadliest tornado season in decades. More than 1,200 tornadoes touched down, shattering communities and their safety nets and killing more than 500 people—a death toll unmatched since 1953. Drawing on the unique analysis described in their first book, Economic and Societal Impacts of Tornadoes, economists Kevin M. Simmons and Daniel Sutter here examine the factors that contributed to the outcomes of such tornadoes as the mid-April outbreak that devastated communities in North Carolina, the “Super Outbreak” across the southern and eastern United States in late April, and the single, mile-wide funnel that touched down in Joplin, Missouri, among others, in late May.

Recent Developments in Earthquake Seismology: Present and Future of Seismological Analysis

Recent Developments in Earthquake Seismology: Present and Future of Seismological Analysis by Rohtash Kumar, Raghav Singh, Shyam Kanhaiya, Satya Prakash Maurya
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 202 Pages | ISBN : 3031475372 | 72.2 MB

The book presents earthquake source, wave propagation, site amplification, and other seismological studies including earthquake simulation, application of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) in seismology, earthquake early warning system, waveform inversion, moment tensor analysis, receiver function analysis, earthquake prediction, and earthquake early warning system applications. To minimize the losses due to an earthquake, it is better to understand the source properties, medium characteristics, site condition, and amplitude of a probable earthquake at a particular site. The evolutions of earthquake source models make it possible to understand the source dynamics. However, analysis of the source using a single-domain method does not provide a better understanding of the source dynamics. Therefore, this book combines methods from the earthquake spectrum to waveform inversion and joint inversion.

Risk, Uncertainty and Maladaptation to Climate Change: Policy, Practice and Case Studies

Risk, Uncertainty and Maladaptation to Climate Change: Policy, Practice and Case Studies by Anindita Sarkar, Nairwita Bandyopadhyay, Shipra Singh, Ruchi Sachan
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 240 Pages | ISBN : 981999473X | 28.9 MB

This book focuses on integrated disaster risk reduction arising out of climate change and shows how communities build resilience through adaptive and transformative strategies at the local and global levels. It integrates disaster risk, uncertainty, and maladaptation to climate change with evidence from empirical research and a systematic review of existing studies. The book also proposes two important contributions, which makes it distinctive. First, it gives a systematic review of the literature to capture the changing context and concept of risk, uncertainty, and maladaptation to climate change. Second, it uses case studies from around the globe to demonstrate the ways that communities have fostered to build resilience to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Teide Volcano: Geology and Eruptions of a Highly Differentiated Oceanic Stratovolcano

Teide Volcano: Geology and Eruptions of a Highly Differentiated Oceanic Stratovolcano

Teide Volcano: Geology and Eruptions of a Highly Differentiated Oceanic Stratovolcano by Juan Carlos Carracedo, Valentin R. Troll
English | PDF | 2013 | 286 Pages | ISBN : 3642258921 | 52.1 MB

Teide Volcano has many different meanings: For the Guanche aborigines, who endured several of its eruptions, it was Echeide (Hell). Early navigators had in Teide, a lifesaving widely visible landmark that was towering over the clouds. For the first explorers, Teide was a challenging and dangerous climb, since it was thought that Teide's peak was so high that from its summit the sun was too close and far too hot to survive. Teide was considered the highest mountain in the world at that time and measuring its height precisely was a great undertaking and at the time of global scientific significance. For von Buch, von Humboldt, Lyell and other great 18th and19th century naturalists, Teide helped to shape a new and now increasingly 'volcanic' picture, where the origin of volcanic rocks (from solidified magma) slowly casted aside Neptunism and removed some of the last barriers for the development of modern Geology and Volcanology as the sciences we know today. For the present day population of Tenerife, living on top of the world's third tallest volcanic structure on the planet, Teide has actually become "Padre Teide", a fatherly protector and an emblematic icon of Tenerife, not to say of the Canaries as a whole. The UNESCO acknowledged this iconic and complex volcano, as "of global importance in providing evidence of the geological processes that underpin the evolution of oceanic islands". Today, 'Teide National Park' boasts 4 Million annual visitors including many 'volcano spotters' and is a spectacular natural environment which most keep as an impression to treasure and to never forget. For us, the editors of this book, Teide is all of the above; a 'hell of a job', a navigation point on cloudy days, a challenge beyond imagination, a breakthrough in our understanding of oceanic volcanism that has shaped our way of thinking about volcanoes, and lastly, Teide provides us with a reference point from where to start exploring other oceanic volcanoes in the Canaries and beyond. Here we have compiled the different aspects and the current understanding of this natural wonder.

Earthquake Prediction by Seismic Electric Signals: The success of the VAN method over thirty years by Mary S. Lazaridou-Varotsos
English | PDF | 2013 | 259 Pages | ISBN : 364224405X | 6.9 MB

As evidenced dramatically and tragically in 2011 alone, earthquakes cause devastation and their consequences in terms of human suffering and economic disaster can last for years or even decades. The VAN method of earthquake prediction, based on the detection and measurement of low frequency electric signals called Seismic Electric Signals (SES), has been researched and evaluated over 30 years, and now constitutes the only earthquake prediction effort that has led to concrete successful results. This book recounts the history of the VAN method, detailing how it has developed and been tested under international scrutiny.

Rainfall Infiltration in Unsaturated Soil Slope Failure by Lizhou Wu , Jianting Zhou
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 140 Pages | ISBN : 9811997365 | 31.9 MB

The aim of this book is to provide a thorough grounding in rainfall-induced landslides from three aspects: the coupling effect of hydraulic and mechanic; the analytical, numerical, and physical simulation methods, and the controlling factors underlying the problem of rainfall-induced landslides. The improved numerical methods, nonlinear, and linear iterative methods which can be used to address the related unsaturated infiltration problems are also presented. This book is an essential reading for researchers and graduate students who are interested in rainfall infiltration, landslides, slope stability, and geohazards in fields of civil engineering, engineering geology, and earth science. The book is written to guide professional engineers and practitioners in slope engineering and geohazard management. This book can enhance their understanding of rainfall-induced landslides, help them analyze a specific problem, prevent landslides, and design engineering slopes according to the local soil and climate conditions.
