English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 294 Pages | ISBN : 9819764602 | 41.6 MB

This book presents microplastics pollution in land and water bodies, their hazardous effects, characterization approaches, and suitable means of utilizing advanced treatment options to solve the problem. It is mainly understood that microplastic pollutants are associated with water bodies, however there also exists soil contamination and their interaction with the food web. The discussions related to strategies and policies for the management of microplastics are very limited. This book not only narrows microplastic pollution in marine or fresh water bodies, but also takes into account the terrestrial environment, including the toxicity effects, characterization aspects and treatment approaches. The main feature of the book includes latest research related to microplastics pollution, examining the different health effects including environmental (related) issues and highlights the advances in treatment approaches. The book serves as a guide with an up-to-date information on microplastics related problems, useful for students, researchers, professionals/environmentalists and also as a reference for policy makers.

Heavy Metal Toxicity: Human Health Impact and Mitigation Strategies

Heavy Metal Toxicity: Human Health Impact and Mitigation Strategies by Nitish Kumar
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 385 Pages | ISBN : 3031566416 | 28.4 MB

This edited book brings together a diverse group of environmental science, sustainability, and health researchers to address the challenges posed by global mass poisoning caused by heavy metals contamination of soil and plants. In recent years, contamination of the environment by heavy metals has become a major concern. Their multiple industrial, domestic, agricultural, medical, and technological applications have led to their wide distribution in the environment, raising concerns over their potential effects on human health and the environment. Owing to their toxic, non-degradable, and bio-accumulative nature, the health burden on the population has increased significantly. Heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, mercury, cadmium, and uranium do not play a significant role in metabolism in the human body and are thus toxic. Their exposure in high concentration can cause acute toxicity resulting in acute health conditions, which is easy to observe and regulate, while similar is not visible for immediate action when their exposure is in trace amounts over the years. Heavy metals enter in the food chain through consumption of plant material. A high concentration of heavy metals has been found to be harmful to vegetation. As the heavy metals concentration in plants increases, it adversely affects several biological parameters and eventually renders the soil barren.

Micromachined Mixed-Potential-Type YSZ-Based Sensors for Nitrogen Dioxide Monitoring in Automobile Exhaust by Rui You
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 136 Pages | ISBN : 9819732948 | 48.6 MB

This book presents original methods to facilitate the development of micro-mixed-potential-type nitrogen dioxide sensors, especially in the following aspects: (i) improvement of sensing performance of electrodes; (ii) enhancement of chemical activity of reaction interface; (iii) development of advanced flexible low-power-consumption mixed-potential-type YSZ-based nitrogen dioxide sensors. Miniaturized sensors have steadily emerged into the commercial marketplace as competitive alternatives for monitoring and controlling the pollution gas in automobile industry. Despite the great potential, the real-world applications for most conventional micro-nitrogen dioxide sensors are still limited due to insufficient sensitivity, unacceptable cost, and the lack of robustness under harsh environmental disturbances. To address the issue, micro-nitrogen dioxide sensors based on mixed potential solid electrolyte is an ongoing area of great academic and technological interest. This book is expectedto be a guide for researchers on the way forward to chase future horizons in the fields of instrumentation, electrochemistry and micro/nano-electronics.

The Marginal Soils of Africa: Rethinking Uses, Management and Reclamation by Adornis Dakarai Nciizah, Ashira Roopnarain, Busiswa Ndaba, Mashapa Elvis Malobane
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 376 Pages | ISBN : 3031551842 | 29.6 MB

This book addressed the pressing challenges of climate change, land scarcity, and food security, offering a comprehensive synthesis of research on using, managing, and reclaiming marginal lands in Africa. Unfavourable climatic conditions and rapid population growth intensify competition for land, putting pressure on traditional agricultural soils thus necessitating a transition towards underutilized marginal lands. Reclaiming these damaged and undervalued areas through various technologies presents a promising path not only to food independence but also to second-generation biofuel feedstock production, utilizing excess biomass from these revived lands. While recent years have seen increased focus on restoring degraded lands, a crucial gap remains i.e. a unified knowledge base detailing the efficacy of various reclamation technologies. This book fills that void, empowering farmers and policymakers with the insights they need to make informed decisions, mobilize resources effectively, and ultimately help Africa meet its projected 60% food demand increase.
