The story of Amos Oz's youth, set against the backdrop of the end of the British Mandate for Palestine and the early years of the State of Israel. The film details the young man's relationship with his mother and his beginnings as a writer, while looking at what happens when the stories we tell become the stories we live.
על פי זיכרונותיו של עמוס עוז מילדותו בירושלים בשנים שלפני הקמת המדינה. לאריה אביו, היו תקוות זהירות לגבי העתיד, אבל פניה אמו, רצתה הרבה יותר. אחרי ששרדו את אימת המלחמה והבריחה מאירופה, הגיעו חיי היומיום שהכבידו קשות על נפשה, כדי להתעודד ולבדר את עמוס בן העשר, המציאה סיפורים על הרפתקאות מסעירות, עמוס הוקסם כשקראה לו שירה והסבירה לו פירושן של מילים ושפות, באופן שישפיע על כתיבתו לכל חייו. כשמדינת ישראל זכתה לעצמאות, והדבר לא הוביל לתחושת החיות המחודשת שפניה ציפתה לה, היא הלכה ושקעה בבדידות ועצב. בלי יכולת לעזור לה, עמוס נאלץ להיפרד ממנה מוקדם מדי. בזמן שהוא חוזה בלידתה של המדינה, עליו להתמודד עם חייו החדשים שלו עצמו.
