In the last ten years in America, 2,200 police officers have been arrested in connection with sexual assault. Around half of the complainants of those alleged crimes are reportedly under 18. Reporter Ellie Flynn, pictured, travels to America to meet a group of young women who say they were sexually assaulted by officers whilst in custody.
One woman, 18 year-old Anna Chambers, speaks out for the first time, telling Ellie that she was kidnapped and sexually assaulted by two New York police officers while being arrested in September 2017. DNA from the two accused officers was confirmed to have been found on Anna’s body, but gaps in the law in 35 US states, including New York, mean that it’s not a crime for a police officer to have sex with somebody in their custody, and the sex-related charges Anna accused them of have been dropped. The officers are still currently on trial for bribery and official misconduct.
In California Ellie meets 21 year-old Jasmine, who says she was paid for sex by police officers from the age of 14; and in Vermont, she meets 18 year-old Logan, who took to social media after she felt she had been subjected to sexual assault during an arrest by a police officer. Ellie speaks to the accused officer, Sergeant Nguyen, to hear his side of the story and learn about the impact the accusation has had on his life.
Ellie meets Dr Phil Stinson, an academic at Bowling Green State University in Ohio who has been tracking accusations of sexual assault against police officers across the whole of the United States, and Baltimore Police whistle-blower Larry Smith, who says that there is a culture of “the blue wall of silence” - police officers refusing to report on each other - which is preventing sexual assault accusations being investigated.
