Deux frères, Derek et Daniel (Danny) Vinyard qui vivent à Venice Beach, en Californie, sont deux jeunes étudiants intelligents et charismatiques. Derek rejoint le mouvement skinhead néonazi à la suite de la mort de son père pompier, tué par un dealer noir alors qu'il tentait d'éteindre un incendie dans un ghetto de Los Angeles. Un soir, Derek tue lui-même deux délinquants noirs qui tentaient de voler la voiture de son défunt père. Il est par la suite condamné à trois ans de prison pour homicide volontaire. Danny se retrouve influencé par l'idéologie de son aîné, mais Derek est libéré de prison et désormais radicalement transformé par son incarcération, tente d'empêcher son frère d'emprunter la même voie que lui.
