Die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika zur Zeit des Bürgerkriegs: Der aufsässige Farmer Newton Knight (Matthew McConaughey) aus Mississippi verlässt nach der Zweiten Schlacht um Corinth im Jahr 1862 die Armee der Konföderierten, weil er sich mit deren Werten - Sezession und Sklavenhaltung - nicht identifizieren kann. Als Akt der Rebellion tut er sich mit anderen desertierten Soldaten und sogar einer Anzahl von Sklaven zusammen, um einen eigenen Staat unter den Namen „Free State of Jones“ zu gründen. In Knights beispielloser Gemeinde leben Weiße und Schwarze in Frieden miteinander und kämpfen gemeinsam gegen die Südstaaten. Zu seinen Mitstreitern gehört neben dem entflohenen Sklave Moses Washington (Mahershala Ali) auch seine Liebste, die einstige Sklavin Rachel (Gugu Mbatha-Raw).
