Genocyber (1994, OVA 1-5 Complete)

As the nations of the world begin to merge, world peace is threatened by the private armies of individual corporations. The Kuryu Group has just discovered a weapon that will tip world power in their favor. The Genocyber: a nightmarish combination of cybernetics and psychic potential. At its core: the tortured souls of 2 human beings. Many desire to control this monstrosity, but can its hatred be contained… Battle erupts, and the cyberpunk world of the future is about to explode with violence.

Centred around a young girl named Elaine, Genocyber details the creation of the ultimate biological weapon, created out of two psychic sisters. Starting off in Hong Kong, the story follows Elaine, a young mute girl who is unwittingly dragged into the ambitions of a mad scientist who wants to combine the powers of the girl and her crippled sister to activate the Genocyber itself. After a brutal search that leaves dozens of corpses in its wake, the search ends when the girl is apparently captured by agents of a shadowy government organisation and the scientist arrested. This proves to be wrong however and the girl escapes, killing the scientist and government agents in the process. This particular episode of the OVA ends when the girl finds her only friend, a young boy, dead after falling to his death from a construction site. The girl becomes filled with anger and screams, turning into Genocyber, and initiating a massive explosion which levels Hong Kong…

Like most of the other 1990s cyberpunk anime, the anime is quite violent. It features many of the victims in the OVA with dismembered body parts and excessive killings that include gore and internal dismemberment. For example, the assistants of Dr. Reed kill everyone in the hospital so they can find Elaine; they kill the nurses and doctors by pulling them apart, ripping their organs and intestines. The last victim is the detective that watches Elaine, who has a brutally performed "surgery". There is also a scene where two men molest a young boy. Elaine's friends in the second OVA are shot by the helicopter gunships, and their entire body is disintegrated. The third OVA is less violent, save the parts where Ryu accidentally kills a man. There is also a sex scene where Mel and Ryu make love, but this is not graphic, yet still quite obvious. The entire anime is filled with destruction and describes much of what happens in a post apocalyptic world in the fourth OVA.
