Great Art is introduced by curator and broadcaster Tim Marlow, Director of The London Design Museum and features a host of eminent art experts, providing the perfect guides to history's artistic greats.

Part 1: Van Gogh and Japan
Tim Marlow explores Japanese influences on Van Gogh's art, a country he never visited during his life. The programme examines the tremendous impact that exhibitions of Japanese art in Paris in the middle years of the 19th century had on Van Gogh and his peers, including Monet and Degas. Van Gogh's decision to abandon the city for the south of France in his final years was driven in part by a desire to find an environment closer to Japan, and Asian influences can be clearly seen in the exciting new direction his work took during this period.

Part 2: I, Claude Monet
Tim Marlow reveals the story behind Monet's greatest paintings, exploring the contrast between his good-humoured love of life and his feelings of loneliness and depression. The programme revisits many of the locations where he painted, and reveals how a passion for gardening led to the glories of his famous Giverny garden.

Part 3: Vermeer and Music from the National Gallery
Tim Marlow explores the life and work of Johannes Vermeer, examining what a painting on display at the National Gallery reveals about the artist's relationship with music - a popular theme among his peers in the Dutch art world. He also uncovers the stories behind many of Vermeer's other works, including Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Part 4: Matisse from Tate Modern and MoMA
Tim Marlow goes behind the scenes at Tate Modern's Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs, one of the most successful exhibitions in the museum's history. Featuring contributions from Tate director Nicholas Serota and MoMA director Glenn D Lowry, as well as curators, historians and people who knew the artist personally.

Part 5: Renoir: Revered and Reviled
Tim Marlow explores the extreme positive and negative reactions to Renoir's changing style, examining some of the 181 paintings held at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia. The film reveals how his new direction was an influence on Picasso and Matisse, making it a vital turning point in the development of art between the 19th and 20th centuries.
