Durante le fasi finali della Seconda guerra mondiale, la gente nelle grandi città europee è in balia delle incursioni aeree e della morte per fame. Una giovane madre disperata lascia i due figli gemelli tredicenni in campagna in casa della nonna alcolizzata e crudele. Chiamata dagli abitanti la strega per aver avvelenato il marito tempo prima, la donna cresce i ragazzi in un ambiente disumano e assurdo dove per loro l'unica risorsa per sopravvivere è quella di imparare a diventare insensibili e spietati. Per fortificare corpo e spirito, i due fratelli iniziano a leggere la Bibbia, a imparare le lingue straniere e a praticare esercizi di resistenza, tenendo le mani sul fuoco, tagliandosi con un coltello e imparando a non sentire gli insulti. Inoltre, tengono anche un dettagliato diario sugli eventi di guerra di cui sono testimoni, un testo in cui ogni parola è deprivata di carica emotiva e di valutazioni soggettive.
