This exquisite documentary details Johannes Vermeer's works and family life in Delft, Netherlands, including his marriage and conversion to Catholicism. Not much is known of how he trained for 6 years, as was the custom, under a master painter in order to be allowed membership in the guild of painters. The narrator explains how 5 painters could have been his tutors. Vermeer's wife Katerina had 15 births, so pregnancy and birth were common conditions of their lives. His father was a weaver of fine fabrics and so it is thought that this is why many fabrics are shown in his work. Symbolism in paintings is explained in several of his paintings.
