Русские ученые, историки, археологи писали в день открытия музея 27 мая 1883 года: "События великого прошлого, деяния предков наших предстанут как бы воочию перед тысячами людей, разнесутся молвою по всему обширному Отечеству нашему, перейдут к детям и внукам нашим".
