"The way he works the images in the darkroom makes photography look like one of the most interesting things anyone could do for a living. He discovers (makes) nuances of light that are just plain beautiful, that create an enchanted sculptural stillness.
The camera inevitably lies, so choosing the kind of lie you want to tell is actually the creative act of photography. There are few better and more interesting liars than he". BRIAN ENO
An excellent documentary on photographer and filmmaker Anton Corbijn (made around the time he was completing work on his Joy Division film, Control, and featuring interviews and behind-the-scenes footage of cast and crew). Creator of some of the most iconic images of the latter part of the twentieth century, his densely-toned high-contrast style is instantly recognisable >> indeed, it's the toning as much as the composition that gives his images such potency, allowing him to extensively manipulate and treat his subjects to the point where the finished print often bears littler resemblance to what went before the camera. That his fearless darkroom manipulations and formal radicalism have found success in the commercial realm is a testament to the strength of his personal vision. Corbijn himself is a thoughtful, funny and reserved interviewee >> even though surrounded by adoring friends and admirers, he cuts quite a solitary figure: forever on the move, having devoted his life to the Image.
Extensive interviews with Bono, Michael Stipe, Depeche Mode, professional talking-head Paul Morley and many more. If you're interested in photography and visual thinking, this is essential viewing.
