The Channel Tunnel is one of the seven wonders of the modern world but what did it take to build the longest undersea tunnel ever constructed? It’s the 25th anniversary of its opening; a project that’s been blighted by flood, fire, tragic loss of life and financial bust ups. Today, it stands as an engineering triumph and a testament to what can be achieved when two nations, Britain and France put aside their historic differences and work together.
    Episode 1:
The tunnel under the English Channel is an engineering triumph and a testament to what can be achieved when two nations work together. But what did it take to build the longest undersea tunnel ever constructed? The first of a two-part documentary, marking the 25th anniversary of its opening, focuses on the early stages of the build. The men and women who worked on the project share their memories of operating in the highly dangerous environment, former deputy prime minister John Prescott remembers the battles with contractors and banks to get the tunnel built and one-time Tomorrow's World presenter Judith Hann reveals how it captured the public's imagination.

    Episode 2:
Part two of two. The pace hots up as the British and French tunnellers race towards the breakthrough point, which occurs on December 1, 1990 when the two sides meet. By 1994, the tunnel was open for business, but in 1996 a catastrophic fire highlighted the dangers of operating a railway tunnel that is 31 miles long.
