    Der junge, ambitionierte Pressesprecher Stephen Myers (Ryan Gosling) arbeitet für den aufstrebenden Präsidentschaftskandidaten Mike Morris (George Clooney), der sich mit Senator Pullman (Michael Mantell) in den demokratischen Vorwahlen ein Kopf-an-Kopf-Rennen liefert - und da die Republikaner darniederliegen, hat der Gewinner große Chancen, nicht nur Kandidat seiner Partei, sondern auch nächster US-Präsident zu werden. Um seinen Schützling zum Wahlsieg zu verhelfen, macht Myers selbst vor zweifelhaften Methoden keinen Halt, weil er überzeugt ist, dass Morris mit seiner Aufrichtigkeit endlich ein guter Präsident für alle Amerikaner sein könnte. Doch dann überschlagen sich die Ereignisse. Myers bekommt bei einem geheimen Treffen das Angebot, das Lager zu wechseln. Er lehnt zwar entrüstet ab, doch die Journalistin Ida Horowicz (Marisa Tomei) kommt dahinter und droht, ihn mit einer Story zu ruinieren. Dann eröffnet Myers‘ Freundin, die Praktikantin Molly Stearns (Evan Rachel Wood), ihm auch noch, dass Morris sie nach einer Party verführt und geschwängert hat…
