Jules und Nic sind seit Jahren ein gluckliches Paar, mit der 18-jahrigen Joni und dem 15-jahrigen Laser haben sie zwei aufgeweckte Kids. Unruhe in ihr Dasein bringt die Erkenntnis, dass ihre Kinder Kontakt zu ihrem biologischen Vater aufgenommen und ihn zu sich nach Hause eingeladen haben. Die Ankunft des alten Hippies Paul bringt Nic auf die Palme, zumal er Jules schnell verspricht, ihr bei ihren bislang wenig erfolgreichen Versuchen als Landschaftsgartnerin unter die Arme zu greifen. Konfrontationen scheinen unausweichlich. Sieben Jahre nach ihrem wunderbaren "Laurel Canyon" kehrt Lisa Cholodenko mit ihrem bislang aufwendigsten Film zu den versprengten Kunstlerenklaven im Einzugsgebiet von Los Angeles zuruck. Trotz der durchaus ernsten Thematik uberwiegt ein komodiantischer Ton, der auch einem Mainstreampublikum sofort Zugang zu der ungewohnlichen Figurenkonstellation ermoglicht. Julianne Moore und Annette Bening sind hinrei?end als etwas eingefahrenes Lesbenpaar, Mark Ruffalo unwiderstehlich als Mann, der die Konventionen unerwartet aufwirbelt.
