This television movie is adapted from the book of the same name by award winning crime author Peter Temple.
Shot in widescreen and making the most of the beautiful coastline and landscape it looked very rich on the big screen.
This quiet seaside town is peopled with lost souls all trying to deal with aspects of their past that they would rather forget.
The main protagonist is Melbourne Homicide Detective Joe Cashin (Don Hany) who has been posted back to his hometown after a work incident which has damaged his body and his psyche.
Joe is not only haunted by images of this incident but also memories of his childhood aroused by the familiar surroundings.
But Joe is not the only broken person on this Broken Shore as he discovers following the death of wealthy local man Charles Burgoyne.
The bleakness of the remote location and the storyline itself involving difficult issues such as racism and child abuse, are eased by Joe's emerging relationship with new neighbour and local lawyer Helen Castleman (Claudia Karvan).
There are a few gruesome scenes and some gaps in the plot line but overall it is a satisfying but unsettling crime thriller which should command excellent ratings when it screens on television next year.
