Nel 1969, in una scuola per sole ragazze nella campagna inglese, una strana epidemia si diffonde tra le allieve, colpite da misteriosi svenimenti e spasmi. Al centro dell'epidemia vi sono l'intensa ed intelligente Lydia Lamont e l'ammirata e ribelle Abbie Mortimer, entrambe sedicenne. Le due giovani si sono promesse amicizia eterna incidendo le loro iniziali su una maestosa quercia, situata in uno stagno ritenuto magico, ma ben presto qualcosa comincia a separarle. Per trovare conforto all'allontanamento di Abbie, Lydia ha intenzione di scoprire cosa le stia accadendo quando i suoi svenimenti si intensificano e deve affrontare le figure di autorità che la circondano: l'egocentrica madre Eileen, la vicepreside Miss Mantel e l'enigmatica direttrice Miss Alvaro. Con antichi segreti pronti a tornare alla ribalta, Lydia si ritroverà di fronte a una verità inaspettata.
