Tokyo Monogatari follows an aging couple, Tomi and Shukichi, as they journey from their rural village to visit their two married children in bustling, postwar Tokyo. Their reception, however, is disappointing: too busy to entertain them, the children send them off to a health spa. After Tomi falls ill, she and Shukichi return home, while the children, grief-stricken, hasten to be with her.
Un couple âgé entreprend un voyage à Tokyo pour rendre visite à ses enfants. D'abord accueillis avec les égards qui leur sont dus, les parents s'avèrent bientôt dérangeants. Seule Noriko, la veuve de leur fils mort à la guerre, trouve du temps à leur consacrer. Les enfants, quant à eux, se cotisent pour leur offrir un séjour dans la station thermale d'Atami, et se décharger ainsi de leur présence. Mais le lieu de villégiature n'en est pas un, et le couple, fatigué, décide de rentrer à Tokyo dès le lendemain.
