Turkish delight
We are taken to Desideria's wedding to Ramiro. Both appear to be from the Spanish upper classes. Their union seem to be made in heaven, that is, until Desi, whose only wish is to be a mother, realizes she can't conceive a child. Desideria, whose name translates to Desire, finds what she wants almost by accident.

When the couple take a trip with friends to Istanbul, Desi becomes fascinated with the handsome tour guide, Yaman; she begins to fantasize about him until a visit to one of the mosques, where in the shadows they fondle each other, leading to more explicit couplings they steal away without being too obvious.

Back in Madrid, Desi finds out she is pregnant, but surprise, surprise, Ramiro realizes the child was not sired by him, but he is too afraid to do anything about it because of his social status, plus the stigma of being a cuckold in a macho society. Desi delivers the baby boy, but her happiness is short lived because the infant dies.

Desi, inconsolable, decides to go back to Istanbul to find Yaman. The lovers begin a passionate affair. Desi, who doesn't know the language, is at Yaman's mercy for her upkeep. She begins finding things about her lover that will ultimately lead into a tragedy neither one of them cannot avert.

Vicente Aranda, the director of "Amantes" is at it again. For lack of better material, he goes in for the sex aspect of the novel by Antonio Gala, with an energy and a determination of a man half his age. This veteran Spanish director likes to mix his narratives with a lot of the obvious sex that Spanish, and European audiences love to see in their local movies under the guise of culture. This film is a sex melodrama with shades of soap opera.

Ana Belen is perfect as Desideria, the woman that at last finds redemption in sex. She is a woman in love with a good for nothing that has the quality of performing in the sack to perfect satisfaction. Ms. Belen takes risks like no other of her peers, save, maybe, Victoria Abril, another good one for this type of genre. As Yaman, Georges Corraface, the French actor, brings his own heat and he and Ms. Belen show great affinity for doing their thing.

Highly recommended for fans of Mr. Aranda's work, who will not disappoint them.
